"Only Man Around the House"

Storytelling With A Message.......................... It is the ability to relate to this song that charms me into wanting to hear it again and again. I'm "the only man around the house" and, as the song says, "sometimes he don't wanna go home." In spite of the fact that this song begins with words that almost seem to play into that "stereotype" of country music ("Jimbo orders another beer, 'been a long time since we've seen you around here', and he gives me a wink through the bottom of a glass"), the song unfolds into a well crafted lyrical journey all delivered with the reminiscent passion of Bob Seger. This is more than a bar song. This a great example of how songwriting can tell a story and make a point and, simultaneously, gently tap you on the shoulder and tell you that this song just may be about you! I don't usually comment on guitar strumming but I'm finding myself enjoying it on this song. Maybe it's the chord progression or maybe it's the relationship between that strumming and that nice piano part happening alongside the guitar. Either way, the resulting sound is very attractive. I hope this singer is getting the accolades he deserves. We're starting to become brainwashed into thinking that the only viable singers are those who sing like the finalists on "American Idol" and the truth is that the great singer/songwriters of the past would probably have all been scowled at by that Simon guy. The singer on this song (who, I'm guessing is also the songwriter) brings to the listener the enjoyable experience of hearing an authentic performance that is felt throughout the song and the production of it. "The Only Man Around The House"
Encore!!! Ah, what a great tune. Genuinely smiled through the entire song. The lyrics extremely smart and the vocalists ability to sing with the sincerity, delivering the lyrics in the storytelling way that compels the listener to sit on edge waiting for the rest of the story. The melody is excellent and the changes very unique for a country tune. This song has that barroom mish mash, that great Luckenbach, Texas sound with the heavy acoustic play and piano... that the likes of David Allan Coe, Old Willie and Johnny Bush famous. !Loved it!..... "Choptank River Boys"

In God's country one child speaks for heaven. Poetry.
take a pinch of Levon Helm and a couple of grains of Joe Cocker and mix with a handful of Randy Newman and simmer for 4:27. What comes out is a brilliant piece of storytelling with timeless qualities. The layered guitar guitar (possibly mandolins also?) parts are all vyeing for centre stage while perfectly complimenting each other. Put on those cans and close your eyes and lose yourself in the story. Pure brilliance.
